In 2008, the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India, approved Indian Maritime institution (IMU) in Kolkata as a central institution. In addition to its main 4-year B.Tech. program in Marine Engineering, it offers short-term courses connected to the sector as well as PG (M.Tech. and MBA) courses. For admission to both UG and graduate programs, the institute administers its own entrance exam (IMU - CET). Leading shipping corporations in the nation place their employees at the university, which is known for producing some of the greatest maritime engineers in the world. 

The famous Indian knowledge forum "Gateway" presented MERI with the "Gateway award of Excellence in Maritime Education - Quality" on November 27, 2010.

B.Tech in Marine Engineering, MBA in International Transportation & Logistics Management, and M.Tech in Marine Engineering and Management are all offered by the institute. For B.Tech, the cutoff is 145–177.

All program admissions are based on the results of the university's centralized exam, the IMU CET. To make the short list, candidates must also fulfill the requirements.

Admission to B.Tech 2024 at University:

The 4-year B.Tech program in Marine Engineering is offered by Indian Maritime University, Kolkata.

Indian Maritime University's entrance exam serves as the basis for admission to the B.Tech program.  

For the B.Tech program, the institute also permits lateral entrance from candidates who have completed a diploma program in marine or mechanical engineering with at least 60% of the possible points.

Selection Criteria

Admission to the M.Tech and MBA programs is determined by the institution using the results of the IMU CET entrance exam.
There are 120 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) in the admission test covering the following topics: English, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Data Interpretation, Verbal Ability, Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Ability for MBA programs.

Important Points:

Candidates who fall under the SC/ST categories are eligible for a 5% reduction on the minimum score necessary.
M.Tech: To be eligible for admission to this program, candidates from all categories must take and pass the IMU Common Entrance Test (CET). On the other hand, candidates who meet the required GATE / GRE scores might not need to take the IMU CET.

Application Process 2024 at University

In order to be considered for admission to any of the many undergraduate and graduate programs that IMU and its affiliated institutions offer, interested candidates must register for the IMU CET online through the official registration portal found on the university website.
The application fee must be paid online using a credit or debit card or net-banking. There is no reimbursement for the application cost.

  • The application fee for GEN/OBC candidates is INR 1000 (INR 700 for SC/ST students) for all UG and PG programs (apart from BBA).

Steps to fill out the online application for the IMU CET:

  • For registration procedure, go to the University official website.
  • The application number will be generated by the system and sent to the candidate by email and SMS following "Basic Registration," which occurs when the candidate clicks the "Submit" button on the registration page.
  • The candidate's date of birth should be used as the "password" and this system-generated Application Number as the "Login ID" for any further logins.
  • After filling out the 'Detailed Registration' section, students must upload the necessary scanned documents, pay the CET, and provide further information such as their preferred exam city, address for correspondence, and educational details. Registration Fees
  • The student should print the receipt they receive after successfully paying the registration fee online so they have it for future correspondence.
  • It should be noted by candidates that they are entirely responsible for covering the service charges and payment gateway fees associated with completing an online payment transaction.
  • The candidate may select the 'Awaiting Results' option if the Class 12/UG Degree Exam results are still pending at the time of online registration.

Candidates must upload the above mentioned files when completing the online application.

Observations:

  • It is not required of candidates to send hard copies of their applications to IMU.
  • Those who make the short list must register for online counseling in order to be assigned a seat. This will be done when the original transcripts and certificates, physical fitness certification, etc., have been verified.
  • Candidates who wish to register for University online counseling must pay INR 10,000 (non-refundable).
