Nava Nalanda Mahavihara was founded in 1951 by Rajendra Prasad and has UGC approval. University was established in order to revitalise the historic Nalanda School of Education, which dates back to the 5th century. The original disciplines taught at university in antiquity were Pali and Buddhism. Today, it provides various courses in a variety of specialisations, including Pali, Philosophy, Ancient History, and many more. University provides B.A. (Hons) and certification and certificate programs in 3 subjects. It also provides Ph.D. and M.A. programs in over 5 specialisations.

•  Candidates for the B.A. program must hold a diploma or 12th degree with at least 50% and appear for the university's competency exam.
• Candidates for the M.A. program must pass the competency exam and hold a bachelor's degree in a related discipline.

Master's degree in the relevant discipline is minimum eligibility Ph.D, and candidates are selected for the Ph.D. program based on the results of a research entrance exam administered by the university.
