National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI), Karnal was founded in 1923 as the Imperial Institute of Animal Husbandry and Dairying in Bangalore. It was extended and renamed the Imperial Dairy Institute in 1936, and it became the National Dairy Research Institute after gaining independence in 1947. In 1955, the NDRI headquarters was moved to Karnal. Facilities in Bangalore were kept to act as a Regional Station for the Southern States.

Admission 2024 to B.Tech Program
University provides B.Tech program in Dairy Technology (DT). This degree program provides extensive instruction in milk processing and quality control, as well as engineering elements of dairy processing equipment. The B. Tech (DT) curriculum lasts 4 years.
Admission to the B.Tech program requires 12th or equivalent exams in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and English from a board or university recognised by the Institute. Only applicants with at least 50% marks or an equivalent CGPA in aggregate are eligible for admission to B.Tech (Dairy Technology). Candidates from Scheduled Caste/Tribe and PH must have 40% or an equivalent GPA.
The Education Division of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi, conducts an All India Combined Entrance Examination for admission to the B.Tech (DT) program. Candidates are selected for admission based on their performance in the combined exams and counselling.
Admission will be granted on the basis of merit through the All India Entrance Exam conducted by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).

Admission 2024 to Diploma
To be eligible for admission to the diploma program, must have 10th or equivalent exam with at least 50% marks in aggregate for General and OBC, and 40% marks for SC/ST, PH applicants. The minimum age restriction is established at 15 years as of or before July 31st of the year of entrance, with maximum age limit of 21 years.
Note: The maximum age restriction for during service candidates is 45 years as of July 31st.
The University conducts an entrance test for admission to the Diploma program. In May/June, the examination is held at NDRI, Karnal, as well as regional stations in Bangalore and Kalyani. Candidates are selected based on their performance in the Entrance Examination and Counselling.
The Diploma in Dairy Technology and Diploma in Animal Husbandry & Dairying are both 3-year courses. The course follows a semester schedule. Following the 5th semester, students must complete one semester of in-plant/field training at a commercial dairy plant/field.

Admission 2024 to M.Tech Program
University provides an M.Tech program in dairying and related fields at the PG level. The Master of Dairying program lasts at least 3 years for students who have completed a three-year undergraduate degree program and 2 years for graduates with 4-year professional degrees.
Candidates with Bachelor's Degree in the appropriate discipline as listed below must have secured at least 60% marks (for SC/ST/PH candidates, 50% marks) or a certificate from the Registrar indicating an OGPA equivalent to 60% marks.
Candidates are selected for admission based on their performance in the Entrance Examination and Counselling. If the applicants receive equal marks in the admission exam, the previous year's results will be considered for assessing their inter-se-merit. If the previous year's results are the same, the date of passing/clearing the degree will be considered.

Admission 2024 to Ph.D. Program
The Institute also provides Ph.D. degrees in dairy research and allied fields. After completing the courses, the scholars may be sent to the Main Campus, Karnal or Southern Regional Station, Bangalore/ Eastern Regional Station, Kalyani campus, or other ICAR Institutes to work on their thesis projects. The Ph.D. program is available in fifteen subjects, as listed in the table.
The course for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy must last at least 6 semesters (3 academic years) for students with a 4+2 or 3+3 (UG + PG) education structure. The student with a 3+2 background will need to take pre-requisite courses for 8 semesters (4 academic years). The maximum time of study for completing Ph.D. degree is 6 years.
