Karnatak University, Dharwad (KUD) was established on March 1, 1950. It is the 2nd oldest university in the state. The University Grants Commission has designated the university as having "Potential of Excellence". It has campuses in Haveri, Belgaum, Dharwad, Bijapur, and Gadag. It has 249 colleges connected with it. Under its 5 departments- Science, Arts, Commerce, Law and Education, Karnatak University (KUD), Dharwad delivers 50 PG courses, 4 Advanced Diploma courses, 11 Certificate, 26 M.Phil and 42 Ph.D courses. For the benefit of the state's students, it also offers many UG and PG courses through the Directorate of Distance Education.

To give skill training to fresh graduates and diploma holders in Engineering and Technology, the university's Dharwad campus has launched the National Apprenticeship Training Scheme under the MHRD of the Government of India. Selection Procedure:
Admission to Ph.D programs is determined by 100-marks written test. All questions will be multiple-choice style. Candidates who pass the written test must attend the Personal Interview. Candidates who have qualified for GATE, NET, SLET, JRF, or are FIP/QIP fellows do not need to take the written test.
Application Process:
Candidates who intend to apply for Doctoral courses must complete out an application form, which is available on the university's official website. Payment is done online. Candidates should keep a printout of the application form and payment slip for their records.
Admission 2024 to Distance Learning Courses
For students who are unable to attend classes on a regular basis, the university offers separate distance education courses through the Directorate of Distance Education. The university offers the following UG Distance courses over 3-year period:
