English and Foreign Languages (EFL) University began as the Central Institute of English in 1958 and was renamed the Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages in 1972. The institute was granted central university status in 2006 and eventually changed to its current name. The Lucknow campus of the university was established in 1979.

The institute provides undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate diploma, and doctoral programs in English teaching. It also provides Certificate and Diploma courses. India Today ranked the university 21st in 2018, with decent placements.

EFL Admissions

EFL University, Lucknow Admission is based on entrance exam performance and qualification exam scores relevant to the course chosen. Candidates seeking admission to the Ph.D. program must participate in an on-campus interview. The admission process is conducted entirely online.

• Candidates for BA English must have scored 50% in the Intermediate/10+2 test with English as one of the subjects.
• Candidates for MA in English and Linguistics must have a Bachelor's degree in any subject with a minimum of 55%. For Ph.D. in English Literature, candidates must have a minimum of 55% in MA English or an M.Phil. English in English Literature or Commonwealth Literature.
• 55% of marks in M.A. Applied Linguistics/M.A. Phonetics/M.A. Linguistics/M.A. English (with phonetics or linguistics courses/papers) or M.Phil.
• Ph.D. in Linguistics and Phonetics requires Applied Linguistics/M.Phil. Phonetics/M.Phil. Linguistics/M.Phil. English (with a specialization in Phonetics or Linguistics) and 55% of marks in M.A. TESL/M.A. ELT/M.A. English (with at least one course in the domain of ELT).
