One of the best engineering and research institutes, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD) was founded in 1961 and is spread across 320 acres in the Hauz Khas neighbourhood of Delhi. 2 further branches of the institute are situated in Jhajjar and Sonipat. Abu Dhabi is located to IIT Delhi's international campus. In the engineering category, IIT Delhi is placed "2" and overall, "3" according to the NIRF Ranking 2023. Additionally, IIT Delhi's ranking in the QS World University Ranking 2025 has increased by 47 spots, from 197 to 150. 

The most popular courses offered by university are B.Tech and M.Tech. IIT Delhi accepts GATE scores for M.Tech admission, which is followed by COAP counselling, a written exam, and an interview. For B.Tech admission, the process is based on JEE Advanced followed by JOSAA counselling. It also offers B.Des, MBA, M.Des, M.Sc., Ph.D., and PG Diploma in addition to B.Tech and M.Tech.

Admission 2024 at University

Admission to university for 2024 is now open. For admission to its various courses, the institute accepts scores from national entrance tests, including JEE-Main, JEE-Advanced, GATE, UCEED, IIT JAM, and CAT. At IIT Delhi, the most popular courses are B.Tech and M.Tech. 

  • To be admitted to the B.Tech program, students must pass the JEE Advanced after meeting the eligibility requirements for the JEE-Main. Following their selection, the successful candidates will have to take part in the Joint Seat distribution Authority JoSAA's counselling process for seat distribution based on their ranks and preferences.
  • GATE scores are accepted by IIT Delhi for M.Tech admission. Based on how well they performed on the GATE, candidates are shortlisted and invited to additional rounds of interviews in accordance with the guidelines provided by a specific department on the official website.
  • The Common Admission Test (CAT) is used for MBA admissions, and applicants who pass are then invited for GD & PI.

 Scholarships for Students

Various financial support and scholarships are available to IIT Delhi students registering in different courses. These resources assist students in managing their finances and covering program-related and academic costs. Depending on their credentials and test results, the institute offers both internal and external scholarships to its students. A student cannot receive a grant or scholarship if they do not meet certain basic conditions.

Among IIT Delhi's most well-known scholarship programs are the ones listed below:

Academic Merit Cum Means Scholarship:

  • Students participating in university-level M.Sc. or engineering and technology programs are eligible for the Merit Cum Means (MCM) Scholarships.
  • The guidelines of the Institute state that only 25% of students are eligible to obtain this prize.
  • the IIT Delhi students whose household income, or parents' annual income, exceeds INR 4.5 lakh.
  • Students from the GEN, OBC, or EWS groups receive a monthly reward of INR 1000 and are not needed to pay for their instruction.
  • There is no tuition for any student who fits under the SC, ST, or PwD categories.

Support with Research:

  • Research support is provided to IIT Delhi Ph.D. or research program participants who are willing to work for the department.
  • Any full-time student participating in research-based programs at IIT Delhi.
  • Students are guaranteed at least INR 15,000 per month if they can work around 20 hours per week.
  • A monthly stipend of INR 24,000 is provided to students who join the MS Research Program in exchange for eight hours of employment.

Campus at University

The campus life at IIT Delhi is active and varied. The campus has all the conveniences needed to give every student a comfortable and stimulating living environment. IIT Delhi offers a number of facilities, such as the following:

Central Library:     To support teaching and learning, the Centre offers a sizable collection of books, periodicals, and online materials. It also offers an excellent setting for growth and learning. Students can plan their preparation time in the main library and make use of all the necessary tools. There are 1,93,249 books and 7,102 Books in Text Book & Book Bank are available in university.

Guest Houses:     To welcome guests, IIT Delhi provides well-furnished guest rooms with facilities including AC, Wi-Fi, connected bathrooms, and linen. Parents of students, visiting staff, and alumni will all find their stay comfortable thanks to the well-maintained rooms with all the facilities.

Sports Complex:    IIT Delhi offers a variety of athletic facilities, such as playgrounds and sports tracks. On the main playground of IIT Delhi, there is a 400-meter racetrack and a running/walking track. Athletic fields, cricket, hockey, football, basketball courts, clay and synthetic tennis courts, volleyball courts, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a snooker table, a gym with separate rooms for men and women, and athletic fields are just some facilities available to faculty members and their families. The Gulmohar guest house in the Student Activity Centre (SAC) is close to several of these facilities, and a new sports complex is being constructed across from the hospital. The spaces are available for team activities and have set hours of operation. Team and activity registration is aided by the SAC sports officer's office.

Health services:    The IIT Delhi Hospital offers academic, staff, and students emergency care as well as medical attention in order to maintain the wellbeing of the campus community.
The Computer Services Centre (CSC) of the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) offers Internet access across the campus and is outfitted with high-performance computing resources to facilitate a variety of computational studies.

Cafeterias and Dining:     Students from various Indian cultures may select from a wide range of culinary options at IIT Delhi's several cafeterias and student messes. 

Student Activity Centre (SAC):     The SAC serves as a central location for organising clubs, societies, and extracurricular activities that span a wide range of interests, including robotics, theatre, and music.

Facilities for innovation and research:    The Indian Institute of Technology Innovation and ground-breaking research are greatly supported by Delhi's innovative academic institutions and labs, such as the Central Research Facility and Nanoscale.

A variety of festivals and activities are held at IIT Delhi to enhance campus life. One of the biggest cultural festivals in India, Rendezvous takes place every year and features performances by dance, theatre, and literary groups. Tryst is a technical event that includes competitions, workshops, and engineering and technology projects. To encourage a start-up culture, the Entrepreneurship Development Cell (EDC) organises events like competitions, seminars, and presentations.  The Sports Meet is an annual event that celebrates athletic ability and team spirit.

Hostels of University

At IIT Delhi, hostels play a significant role in student life. Approximately 7000 of the 13000 students stay in the 17 hostels that are managed by the Board for Hostel Management (BHM): 12 are for males, 4 are for girls, and 1 is a transit accommodation for girls.

Not all students, especially male PG students, are promised a hostel seat straight once, even if rooms are allotted transparently in accordance with institute norms. The new, centrally AC apartments are reserved for non-M.Sc. PG students, including Ph.D. researchers, while the old, non AC rooms a mix of UG and graduate students. With fewer available dorms, students may need to search outside of campus for private accommodation.
