NIT Rourkela is a self-governing technical university that was founded in 1961. It includes 20 departments, around 7700 students, 390+ academic members, and 350+ staff members. Located on 648 acres, it is an independent technological university recognized by the NBA. This organization, which receives funding from the Indian government, is acknowledged as an Institute of National Importance. With 17 departments providing UG, PG, and Ph.D. degrees, it provides a broad range of academic programs. In June 2024, a new short-term course on natural language processing and exploring deep learning—its applications and practical implementations—was also introduced.
In an effort to boost the number of female students enrolled at university, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan launched 6 schemes.

With a 16% increase in average CTC from INR 11.15 LPA in 2021–2022 to INR 12.95 LPA in 2022–2023—university records the most campus placements in 2022–2023.
