Mewar University is an independent organization established by the Mewar Education Society (MES) in Chittorgarh, Rajasthan. It was established by an ordinance issued by the Rajasthani government in 2008 and approved by the Rajasthan Assembly through Act No. 4 of 2009. The University Grants Commission has granted the institution approval under UGC Act 2(f) and the authority to award degrees under UGC Act 22(1) through letter No.F.9-15/2009 (CPP-I) dated March 30, 2009. The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) counts the university as one of its members. Additionally, University has NAAC accreditation and approval under Section 12B of the UGC Act of 1956.

The University, which is situated close to Gangrar and historic Chittorgarh in Rajasthan—the home of Maharana Pratap, Meera Bai, and many others—is tucked away among the Aravali hills.
